WINCHESTER & WOLVESEY CASTLE

WINCHESTER & WOLVESEY CASTLE

If one place lies at the centre of English history and embodies the romantic vision of an English heartland, it is Winchester. Leaving the port by coach with your English-speaking guide, drive to this beautiful city, where, among other monuments, you will visit the famous Cathedral. Dating back to the VII century, when a Christian church was first built on the site, it has since played a fundamental part in the life of this ancient city and a key role in English history. The tour will give you a unique appreciation of its sacred architecture and art as well as introducing you to this important symbol of England, as you admire the elaborately carved flowers and plants, owls and monkeys, dragons and knights of the choir stalls with their magnificent gabled canopies. Next up, it s time to visit medieval Wolvesey Castle, which despite its name was in fact a luxurious palace. The open-air ruins stand in the south-east corner of the walled area of the city, close to the cathedral and the remaining wing of a baroque house dating from the 1680s, that is still the private home of the bishop of Winchester. Finally, you will have the opportunity to explore the fairy-tale centre of this royal city that is so full of the echoes of its fabled past, before returning to port and your next adventure.

Please note: Even though all sites visited are wheelchair-friendly, some areas of Winchester Cathedral may be limited for guests using a wheelchair. They can access the ground floor and the retrochoir area which has a lift on one side of the nave only. As this tour includes long parts of walking and uneven terrain at the Wolvesey Castle ruins, comfortable shoes are recommended. Parts of Wolvesey Castle ruins are uneven and can become muddy, due to the location of the site, it is liable to flooding after heavy rain so may be closed at short notice. Guests are requested to wear appropriate attire for religious visits. In case of partial works inside the Cathedral, religious celebration or private events, the guided visit will be omitted, and participants will receive the information outside the site. Those interested in the inside visit, will still be able to enter the Cathedral but will have to pay the ticket price on the spot.<-p>

SOUTHAMPTON WALK ON TITANIC TRAIL

SOUTHAMPTON WALK ON TITANIC TRAIL

Discover Southampton s historic buildings and its links with the legendary RMS Titanic on this fascinating walking tour which is conducted in English or German only. The Titanic pulled away from the White Star dock in Southampton for the start of her maiden voyage on 10th April 1912. Five days later in the early hours of 15th April she sank after striking an iceberg. The disaster made headlines across the world and had a devastating effect on the people of Southampton. Of the 724 crew which lived within in the area - only 175 returned home. Your interesting walking tour commences from the pier. A leisurely stroll will take you through Queen s Park and past the luxury flats which used to be the old South Western Hotel. This hotel was the accommodation for First-Class passengers before embarking on the majestic liner. Close by are the old White Star offices where Southampton residents gathered in the hundreds, waiting day after day for news of loved ones. A walk along Oxford Street will take you past some of the drinking establishments enjoyed by the ill-fated crew including The Grapes pub, which is where filming took place for the famous "Titanic" movie. At the end of the street are the ruins of Holyrood Church where a memorial to the Titanic crew stands. As you wander past the ancient Southampton walls and through the main shopping precinct, with its eclectic mix of shops, you ll hear poignant tales of the Titanic heroes and survivors. The highlight of the tour is a visit to SeaCity Museum on your own. This interactive Museum is filled with information and interesting memorabilia of the fateful disaster and illustrates the impact the liner has had on the city.

Please note: There is up to 3 hours walking on mostly flat ground with some slight inclines. Guests of limited mobility are requested to evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability before taking part. Guests can opt to remain in the city centre and make their own way back to the ship at their leisure. We recommend layered clothing, waterproof or brolly and good walking shoes. The guides will provide information about the SeaCity Museum outside the venue- the visit to the Museum is unguided.<-p>

We will admire the choir stalls with their magnificent gabled canopies, elaborately carved flowers and plants, owls and monkeys, dragons and knights. Next we will have the opportunity to explore the centre of this ancient and royal city which still resounds to the echoes of its fabled past.
