EVOCATIVE SCENERY OF THE ISLE OF LEWIS: PORT NESS AND ITS LIGHTHOUSE

EVOCATIVE SCENERY OF THE ISLE OF LEWIS: PORT NESS AND ITS LIGHTHOUSE

This short excursion allows you to discover some of the most remote and picturesque places in the Hebrides. With your guide providing information in English, you board a coach for an approximately 45-minute drive across the Isle of Lewis to the small village of Port Ness with its charming little harbour built in the early 19th century. The community is a stronghold of the Gaelic language and boasts the highest percentage of Gaelic speakers in the country. For generations, Ness has been home to many seafarers, who are celebrated in the works of local artists. Here you will have some free time to take photos around the harbour and visit the Harbour View Gallery to admire original paintings and art prints by the artist Anthony J Barber. Afterwards, another short coach ride takes you to the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, which is in a stunning location. Built in 1862 by the Stevenson brothers, its special feature is that unlike many other Scottish lighthouses it is made of red brick. If you love social media or if you are a photo enthusiast in general, this is the place to take some very evocative shots of the lighthouse s exterior with its beautiful sea views. The area is also known for being the windiest place in the UK, so much so that it is mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records! Once back on the coach, the journey back to the ship allows you to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Lewis again.

Please note: it is advisable to wear flat, comfortable shoes and bring a rain jacket. The island is quite hilly in nature and can be muddy depending on the weather conditions on the day of your visit. The tour may include some gravel walking trails. This tour may have multiple departures throughout the ship s time in port. You will receive all information about your specific departure the day before the excursion.<-p>

GREAT BERNERA: A JOURNEY TO THE IRON AGE

GREAT BERNERA: A JOURNEY TO THE IRON AGE

An hour s coach trip with an English guide will take you back in time, to the Iron Age and the small island of Bernera, rich in history, and the largest of the many islands west of Lewis. Crossing the narrow bridge connecting it to the mainland, you will be catapulted into another time. The name means "bear" in Old Norse and dates back to the time of the Viking settlements on the island. Dotted with a few small lobster fishing settlements, the small, rocky Great Bernera is owned by the former Queen s Herald. The coach will take you close to the deserted village of Bostadh, where in 1992 high winds swept away part of the dunes, accidentally revealing an entire Iron Age settlement. You will discover one of the ancient dwellings that has been completely restored, an authentic Iron Age house, perched on an enchanting bay of golden sand. Cross the threshold and be enveloped in the warmth and distinctive aroma of a real peat fire. Your guide will describe to you the lifestyle of the ancient inhabitants. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to explore the small cemetery nearby and take a walk on the beach, framed by the turquoise blue Atlantic Ocean. Please note: at Bostadh, the group is split: some participants visit the house first and others the beach. The tour includes walking on uneven and unpaved terrain with grass, sand, steps, and slopes. Comfortable clothing, flat shoes and a rain jacket are recommended. This tour may have multiple departures throughout the ship s time in port. You will receive all information about your specific departure the day before the excursion. This excursion is not available on Sundays.
LEWS CASTLE: GALLOWS HILL HIKE & MUSEUM

LEWS CASTLE: GALLOWS HILL HIKE & MUSEUM

If you love castles, beautiful scenerym and outdoor walks, this short half-day excursion is for you. Meet your guide at the pier, board a shuttle bus and reach the town where your walking tour begins. From the shuttle bus stop, and following the waterfront, you will walk along a coastal path that offers views of the grounds that were once part of Lews Castle. Keep your camera handy. Before heading inland, the path offers beautiful views of the bay that deserve a shot or two for your memory book. Continue uphill to Gallows Hill, the hill where the town s gallows once stood, another opportunity to take in the views of Stornoway. Your destination will be the imposing Lews Castle, once owned by Sir James Matheson and later sold to Lord Leverhulme, founder of the famous Lever Brothers. Its interesting past includes use as a naval hospital during World War II and as a college in the 1950s. Recently modified, the building includes a modern extension housing a state-of-the-art museum and interpretation centre, which opened in 2016. Together with your English-speaking guide you will visit the Castle and the adjoining Lews Museum and Archives (Museum nan Eilean), one of the most exciting and innovative projects undertaken in the Outer Hebrides in recent years. It creates a gateway to the Gaelic heritage of the Outer Hebrides with museum displays and stories that capture the spirit of the islands, focusing on the intimate relationships between the land, sea, people, and Gaelic culture. The museum will house six world-famous Lewis chess pieces discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis, which will be on permanent display in the museum galleries thanks to a loan agreement with the British Museum. At the end of the visit, you will walk back to the shuttle bus stop to return to the ship.

Please note: this tour involves strenuous walking for approx. 5km on uneven and unpaved terrain and is unsuitable for guests with walking difficulties. Comfortable clothing, flat shoes and a rain jacket are recommended. This tour may have multiple departures throughout the ship s time in port. You will receive all information about your specific departure the day before the excursion.<-p>

This panoramic tour with an English guide takes you to picturesque Harris, famous for its Harris Tweed, a hand-woven cloth made from pure new Scottish wool, dyed using indigenous plants. The rocks discovered here are said to be the oldest in the world. The route that takes you to the fishing village of Tarbert will allow you to admire the striking moonscape of rocks dotted with tiny lakes - lochan - passing the old whaling station of Banamhuinneader dating from before the First World War. You will have some little free time in this beautiful paradise with views of the mountains to the north and the beautiful uninhabited island of Taransay, where the BBC TV series Castaway 2000 was filmed. THE SPECTACULAR CARLOWAY BROCH

THE SPECTACULAR CARLOWAY BROCH

Leave the ship, get on the coach, and enjoy a trip along the coast through the centre of Lewis. The route follows the road overlooking the Atlantic and gives you views of rare beauty. Your destination will be further north to Carloway to discover the famous Dun Carloway broch, the best preserved in the Hebrides. Although not much is known about the construction of these towers or their purpose, it is assumed that they were used by high-ranking families and later as fortifications. This fortified stone tower was built by the Celts around 100 AD. Its location on the side of a knoll overlooking Loch Roag adds to its charm and creates excellent photo opportunities. Your English-speaking guide will give you some information about this structure built without mortar but simply by stacking one stone on top of another. Its imposing double dry-stone walls housing an internal staircase have defied the elements for almost two centuries. After the inside visit, the return to port will conclude your excursion, bringing you back to the present life.

Please note: the tour is on uneven, slightly uphill terrain and is not suitable for guests with motor problems. We recommend wearing comfortable, non-slip shoes and a waterproof jacket in case of rain. This tour may have multiple departures throughout the ship s time in port.
