STORNOWAY, A WALK THROUGH HISTORY AND TRADITION
Excursion details<-strong><-p> Welcome to Stornoway, a place where history and tradition meet extraordinary landscapes. Begin your experience by meeting your English-speaking guide at the pier, before a short shuttle bus transfer brings you to the heart of the town. Your walking tour commences with a 35-minute stroll along the outer harbour, where you can take in sweeping views of the seascape. Along the way, learn about the town¿s maritime history, from the herring industry and the vital role played by the ¿herring girls¿, to the story of the tragic Iolaire disaster in 1919, when 201 men lost their lives just off the coast.<-p> Continue for another 30 minutes deeper into Stornoway, discovering its vibrant present and storied past. Here, you will find out about local treasures such as Harris Tweed, a handwoven textile unique to the Outer Hebrides, and how it has become world-renowned for its quality.<-p> Cross the bridge to reach the lush Castle Grounds, dominated by the impressive 19th-century Lews Castle. Spend approximately 40 minutes exploring these historic grounds at your leisure. The Castle itself, built by Sir James Matheson, played an important role during both World Wars and is a symbol of the island¿s resilience. At the conclusion of the tour, you may choose to return to the port via shuttle bus or continue your independent exploration, ensuring you return in time for your ship¿s departure. Should the Castle be open, you have the option to visit its exhibition independently at your own expense.<-p> Important Information:<-strong>This tour involves walking approximately 2 km on uneven and unpaved terrain and is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair. Comfortable clothing, flat shoes, and a rain jacket are recommended due to variable weather conditions. Admission to Lews Castle and Museum is not included- tickets can be purchased on site should you wish to visit. This tour may have multiple departures throughout the ship s time in port. Excursion details<-strong><-p> Embark on an enriching cycling journey through the Isle of Lewis, accompanied at every step by MSC¿s onboard bike leaders who ensure your safety, provide logistical support, and offer basic insights into each highlight. Riding one of MSC¿s regular bikes, you begin your adventure right from the ship, immediately immersing yourself in the striking landscapes and cultural sites of Stornoway.<-p> Your first stop is the Iron Well, a place steeped in local folklore and once believed to possess healing properties. Next, ascend Gallows Hill, where you can pause to appreciate expansive views and reflect on its storied past. As you cycle onward, the route brings you to the mouth of the River Creed, a peaceful spot where freshwater meets the sea, offering a habitat for a variety of birdlife.<-p> Enjoy a panoramic view of Stornoway Harbour, an area that has played a central role in the town s history as a key port for the Outer Hebrides. Pedal towards the impressive Lews Castle, built in the mid-19th century by Sir James Matheson. The castle, surrounded by lush woodlands, is both a historical and architectural gem, hosting a museum with artefacts from the island¿s past. Pass through the Porter s Lodge Archway, a fine example of Victorian architecture, as you make your way towards the coastline.<-p> Arriving at Braidhe Beach, take a moment for fresh sea air and gentle relaxation, perfect for photos and leisurely conversation. Continue your journey to Saint Columba s Church, Ui (Eaglais na h-Aoidhe), an ancient ruin dating from the 14th century, which stands as a testament to the island¿s spiritual and cultural legacy. This church is the burial place of many Clan Chiefs of Lewis and offers a unique atmosphere of tranquillity and reflection.<-p> Throughout the tour, you will have the opportunity to engage in gentle fitness activity, discovery, and meaningful social moments. As you complete this route, you are not only experiencing the highlights of the Isle of Lewis but also becoming an ¿MSC Bike Adventurer¿¿building lasting memories through culture, nature, and connection with those around you.<-p> Important Information:<-strong>Minimum age to participate: 8 years, and children must be at least 155 cm tall with written parental or guardian consent. The tour covers approx. 26 km with an elevation gain of around 220 meters, suitable for guests with a moderate level of fitness. All participants must complete and sign a safety waiver before the tour. Comfortable sports clothing, closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and a reusable water bottle are recommended. Please help protect the local environment by minimising waste and avoiding single use plastics. The itinerary may be adjusted depending on traffic and weather conditions.<-p>

Excursion details<-strong><-p> Accompanied by MSC¿s experienced onboard Bike leaders, you will enjoy a seamless and safe adventure using MSC s e-bikes, ideal for exploring the scenic and cultural highlights of Stornoway and the Island of Lewis.<-p> Your journey begins at the pier, where you set out towards the Iron Well, a site steeped in local legend and history. Continue to Gallows Hill, once the town¿s place of execution, now offering views that invite contemplation of the island¿s storied past. Pedal on to the mouth of the River Creed, a tranquil spot where the river meets the sea¿a perfect opportunity to enjoy the fresh Hebridean air and perhaps spot local wildlife.<-p> Next, cycle along the waterfront to gain a panoramic view of Stornoway Harbour, a bustling centre of island life since the 19th century. YC EXCLUSIVE: DISCOVER THE ISLE OF LEWIS
Excursion Details<-strong><-p> Meet your English-speaking guide and loom shed¿s owner, Donald John Macleod, at the pier in Stornoway. A 20-minute coach journey leads you to the loom shed in Vatisker for a 45-minute private demonstration. Here, immerse yourself in the authentic process of Harris Tweed weaving, where you can experience the unique textures, sounds and sights that make this cloth world-renowned.<-p> Next, enjoy a 10-minute photo stop at the Gress Land Raiders Monument. Listen as your guide shares information about the Land Raids, a defining event in the social fabric of the Hebrides, which shaped land ownership and community identity. Continue with a 15-minute drive to Garry Beach. Spend 45 minutes exploring the striking sea stacks and the mysterious Bridge to Nowhere, an unfinished early 20th century structure built by Lord Leverhulme, reflecting the island¿s ambitions and challenges.<-p> Head 20 minutes back towards Stornoway and stop at Lews Castle for a 20-minute visit. Delve into the history and heritage of the Outer Hebrides, where exhibits connect you to the island¿s distinctive Gaelic culture and storied past. The castle itself, built in the mid-19th century, stands as a testament to the island s legacy.
