- From the present to the past, the Monastery of St Benedict will leave you open mouthed: the interior is simply stunning, with carved wood covered in gold.

THE WHOLE OF RIO DE JANEIRO: LAGOON, BEACHES AND HISTORY TO UNRAVEL
Get ready to really discover the whole of Rio in a single panoramic tour! First stop: The Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, nestled in the wealthy Lagoa neighborhood, where watersports and a view over Christ the Redeemer steal the scene. Then down to some cult beaches: **Leblón, Ipanema, Copacabana and Leme (pure energy and sand between your toes). But that's not all: Go downtown for some history and power, from the Paço Imperial to the conic-shaped Cathedral, to Cinelândia with its royal-like theater and the huge Biblioteca Nacional**. Rio flows through you. And stays with you.
Main stops
- Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon
- Leblón, Ipanema, Copacabana and Leme beaches
- Imperial Palace
- Rio de Janeiro Cathedral
- Cinelândia
- Municipal Theatre and National Library
The programme
- We will leave the port by coach and travel to Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, situated in the Lagoa district in the south of the city. The lagoon is linked to the Atlantic Ocean by a canal that crosses a small park and the district that lies around it, named Lagoa because of the lagoon. It is now one of the most affluent districts in the city and is often described as "the heart of Rio de Janeiro". Due to its considerable size, the lagoon also hosts countless sports clubs and rowing, canoeing and kayaking competitions, etc. From the lagoon we can see the statue of Christ the Redeemer, which sits at the top of Mount Corcovado.
- Next, we will visit the famous Leblón, Ipanema, Copacabana and Leme beaches, where we will stop to soak up the vibrant atmosphere and take some photos.
- After stopping at the beaches we will head towards the city centre.
- Rio de Janeiro, which means "January River", was essentially a colonial capital until 1808 when the Portuguese royal family and much of the Lisbon nobility moved here to escape the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal. The capital of the kingdom was changed to Rio, which then became the only European capital outside Europe. Given that there was no space and no urban facilities to accommodate the hundreds of noblemen, many of the inhabitants were simply evicted from their homes.
- When prince Pedro declared Brazil's independence in 1822, he chose Rio de Janeiro as the capital of his new empire. It remained the capital even after the military overthrew the monarchy and imposed the Republic in 1889. In 1960, president Juscelino Kubitschek moved the capital from Rio to Brasilia.
- Points of interest that we will have the chance to see on the tour include: the Paço Imperial or Imperial Palace, built in a Colonial style between 1738 and 1743 as a residence for the Portuguese governors of Brazil; Rio de Janeiro Cathedral with its unique conical shape, known as the Metropolitan Cathedral; and Cinelândia (the popular name for Floriano Peixoto Square), which takes its name from the presence of numerous cinemas, theatres and hotels. We will also find some important buildings here such as the Municipal Theatre (built in the early 20th century and inspired by the Garnier opera house in Paris), the National Library**, the biggest in South America with a heritage of over 9 million works, and various museums.
- After the tour of the city we will return to the port.
- This excursion will be conducted mainly by coach.

PETRÓPOLIS: BRAZIL'S IMPERIAL CITY
Get ready to leave the sea behind for a historic climb: Toward Petrópolis, the imperial city nestled in the Serra dos Órgãos's green hills. First stop: the former Quitandinha casino, once upon a time the realm of forbidden gambling and now an elegant convention hall. Then, straight to the Neo-Gothic cathedral of São Pedro de Alcântara, the resting place of the last Brazilian royals. But the real highlight is the Imperial Museum: Thrones, crowns, carriages and past glory. We end in style with Santos-Dumont's a Encantada. Petrópolis is not just an outing: It's an imperial dive.
Main stops
- Quitandinha
- Catedral São Pedro de Alcântara

- Santos-Dumont Museum
The programme

- We stop to see Quitandinha, an important building which is now a congress centre but which used to be the largest casino in Latin America. It was active for only two years as Brazil banned gambling in 1946.
- We then stop to see the São Pedro de Alcântara cathedral, a French Neo-Gothic place of worship dating back to 1939. The building is 70 metres high and houses the Imperial Mausoleum, which contains the tombs of Dom Pedro II, his wife Dona Teresa Cristina, their daughter Princess Isabel and her husband the Count of Eu.
- Afterwards, we reach the Imperial Museum, the main sight in Petrópolis. Once the summer residence of the ruling family, the museum now displays the personal belongings of Emperor Dom Pedro II and his family including paintings, carpets and the golden imperial crown, decorated with 639 diamonds and weighing 1.72 kg, made in 1841 for the Emperor's coronation. We also see the carriage hall and the imperial locomotive.
- We then stop for lunch and continue with a visit of another interesting museum, the Santos-Dumont museum. The building, also known as "A Encantada", was designed by scientist and inventor Santos-Dumont, the father of aviation. It was erected in 1918 and, after being the scientist's private residence, it was turned into a museum in 1946. Prestigious furniture and decorative objects are on display.
