TWIN VOLCANO EXCURSION: MAUNA KEA AND MAUNA LOA

In a nutshell

Volcanoes are one of Hawaii's signature features, and we will admire two of them on this excursion: Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. They lie side by side, shaping the scenery with the strong external signs of their significant volcanic activity.

  • Rainbow Falls
  • Slopes of Mauna Loa
  • Pu’u Huluhulu Native Tree Sanctuary
  • Onizuka Center for International Astronomy

The programme
  • We will leave the port on a coach and begin our excursion with a sightseeing tour of Hilo, the biggest city on the Island of Hawaii, or Big Island, which offers visitors an authentic taste of life on the archipelago.
  • Our itinerary includes a stop at the stunning Rainbow Falls, which plunge 24 metres into a natural pool surrounded by dense, lush tropical vegetation.
  • We will then cross moorland covered by black solidified lava flows on the slopes of Mauna Loa volcano, the biggest active volcano on Earth.
  • We will stop at Pu’u Huluhulu Native Tree Sanctuary, a small hill that is covered with vegetation and stands alone amidst the lava flows from Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, giving us a glimpse of what Hawaii might have looked like hundreds of years ago.
  • Then we will proceed across the slopes of Mauna Kea towards Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, the last part of our excursion. The information centre boasts breathtaking views of the volcano: a lunar expanse that soars right up to the clouds.
