During the communist era, this was the site of the terrifying "death strip", but now freed of this oppressive spectre, the area welcomes visitors with the German Reichstag building on the one and the lovely Unter den Linden boulevard on the other side. Re-connect with your guide at the nearby Holocaust Memorial before heading for East Berlin, passing Bebelplatz, Gendarmenmarkt, Checkpoint Charlie - an iconic reminder of the former political division. The excursion will also give you chance to take a look at what is left of the Berlin Wall before heading back to Berlin airport.

Situated at the mouth of the River Warnow and founded in the year 1195, the Baltic resort of Warnemünde presents visitors with an appealingly quaint townscape - one that this tour gives you a chance to explore on foot. After leaving the ship and meeting your guide, you ll set off on a roughly 2-hour walk around town. The route will take you down the promenade alongside the Alter Strom - literally Old Stream - harbour entrance, complete with moored fishing boats and yachts, old houses that fishing folk call home, cafés and a lighthouse dating back to 1897. Your guide will provide you with interesting information on the history of the lovely old town as you stroll towards a building simply called the Kurhaus - the spa building - which was built in Art Deco style and completed in 1928 according to plans already drawn up in 1898. Once you ve returned to the Alter Strom, you can choose whether to stay and do some shopping or whether to return straight to the ship.

After a chance to visit the 13th-century Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary, Rostock s largest and most important, you ll move on to the Kröpeliner Gate, built around 1900, the 13th-century city hall, Rostock University, founded in 1419, and the 13th-century Monastery of the Holy Cross. As seeing the sights can be thirsty work and since Germany prides itself in its traditionally brewed beers, you ll head for a restaurant to taste a glass of a refreshing beer accompanied by a pretzel. A relaxing 30-minute coach journey back to Warnemünde and your waiting ship will then bring the tour to a close.

Upon arrival in Lübeck, the adventure starts at the iconic Holstentor, Lübeck¿s most famous gateway, which has stood since the late 15th century as a proud symbol of the city¿s Hanseatic power. You will have 30 minutes to explore this landmark, with its distinctive twin towers and Gothic brickwork, once featured on the old German 50-mark note.<-p>

Next, embark on an immersive two-hour guided walking tour through Lübeck¿s UNESCO-listed Old Town. Wander through narrow, cobbled streets and discover hidden courtyards lined with colourful patrician houses. Lübeck, once dubbed the "Queen of the Hanseatic League," boasts a rich history as a centre of medieval trade and culture. Your walk includes a visit to the Holy Spirit Hospital, founded in 1286. One of the oldest social institutions in Europe, it offers a unique look into medieval charitable life and features beautifully preserved Gothic interiors. Continue to St Jacobi¿s Church, another Gothic masterpiece, known for its maritime memorials and intricate brick vaulting.<-p>

Standing at the heart of the city is the grand Rathaus, a remarkable example of medieval architecture and one of the oldest town halls still in use on the continent. The adjacent Rathausmarkt provides a lively setting where you can admire the ornate facades and the impressive St. Mary¿s Church from the outside - a church renowned for its astronomical clock and as a model for many Baltic brick churches.<-p>

After these discoveries, you have one hour of free time. Use this opportunity to enjoy a coffee at a local café, browse for authentic souvenirs, or sample Lübeck¿s world-famous marzipan, first produced here in the 15th century. Conclude with a 90-minute unguided transfer to Hamburg Airport.<-p>
