TRANSFER TO THE CHARMING MONDELLO AND TIME AT THE BEACH

TRANSFER TO THE CHARMING MONDELLO AND TIME AT THE BEACH

This unguided five-hour excursion offers the chance to soak up the charms of a town on Sicily s northern coast that s much-loved by Palermo locals. A 30-minute drive from the port in Palermo journeys to Mondello s main square, signalling the start of a generous allocation of free time - approximately four hours. Use this time to enjoy the town s celebrated beach, a long stretch of bright sand that lies between two rocky headlands, separated from Palermo by the bulk of Monte Pellegrino. It s a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing and relaxing, all aided by fantastic coastal views. And don t miss the Antico Stabilimento Balneare di Mondello, a handsome, Art Nouveau-style building sitting proudly in the centre of the beach, built in the early 20th century as a bathing house. Beyond the beach, Mondello is a fine place to wander. The lavish, pastel-hued villas that line the streets were built during the Belle Époque era when the town boomed as a popular holiday destination for the aristocracy, and there are numerous restaurants and cafes spread around the town. Afterwards, a 30-minute drive back to the port at Palermo concludes the excursion.

Important Information: this tour operates from June until the end of October, depending on weather conditions. We warn participants that there may be algae in the sea and-or on the beach, which is very popular and crowded, especially in the summer months. This could create a lot of crowds on the beach and limit space.<-p>

THE COASTAL CITY OF CEFALÙ AND ITS CELEBRATED CATHEDRAL

THE COASTAL CITY OF CEFALÙ AND ITS CELEBRATED CATHEDRAL

The pale-walled, red-roofed city of Cefalù is a much-loved spot within Sicily. Visit its magnificent cathedral as the first stop of this six-hour excursion, which begins after a one-hour bus journey from Palermo s port. After 10 minutes to leave the coach at the parking lot, you¿ll be ready for the visit. With the start of its construction dating back to the 12th century, the cathedral s completion in 1240 marked the culmination of a remarkable architectural endeavour, and its detailed mosaics are viewed as some of the finest Byzantine mosaics in Sicily and wider Italy. Spend an hour visiting the cathedral before moving to another fascinating - if rather different - attraction nearby, the Lavatoio Medievale. This unique attraction is a medieval wash-house where locals used to do their laundry using water from the River Cefalino. After 20 minutes here, there is a 40-minute guided tour around Cefalù s historic centre, followed by approximately one hour and 50 minutes of free time for further exploration. This could perhaps include purchasing local souvenirs or enjoying a meal at one of the various cafes and restaurants in the area. A one-hour coach journey takes you back to the port at Palermo.

Important Information: this tour includes walking on uneven ground and is unsuitable for guests with walking difficulties. If the Cathedral is closed on public holidays or during special events, the visit will be external. If a religious ceremony is taking place in the cathedrals, the guide will provide information outside, and guests will proceed to the visit individually. Guests are requested to wear appropriate attire for religious visits.<-p>

BEYOND THE GODFATHER: CORLEONE AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE

In a nutshell

Corleone is so much more than just a name linked to the Mafia: it's a place of history, resistance and change. In the lush Ficuzza forest, you'll wander past murals and small stone blocks, tributes to those who challenged the illegal activities here, and visit the center of documentation which gathers together stories of courage and justice. Lunch will have a special significance: you'll be eating in a place which was confiscated from criminal groups.

Main stops
  • Corleone, beyond the stereotypes.
  • From murals to “stumbling blocks”.
  • The CIDMA: the heart of the battle against the Mafia.
  • Lunch in a restaurant confiscated from the Mafia.

The programme

Forget the glamor of the big screen: Corleone isn't a film set, but the site of a real battle. We'll leave Palermo and enter a land marked by courage and the desire for redemption.

Wandering among the streets of Corleone, we'll come across murals that tell the story of the fight against the Mafia, and “stumbling blocks” that honor the sacrifice of those who dared to stand up to their illegal activities.

Then, to the beating heart of Corleone: The CIDMA – Centro Internazionale di Documentazione sulla Mafia e del Movimento Antimafia (the International Center of Documentation on the Mafia and the Anti-Mafia Movement). Here, among the documents and testimonies, the past finds its voice, and the names Dalla Chiesa, Falcone and Borsellino are not just memories, but a legacy that continues to inspire today.

After a pause for reflection, we conclude with an experience that speaks for itself: lunch in a restaurant confiscated from the Mafia, today a tangible symbol of justice and rebirth.

Corleone is much more than you could imagine. Are you ready to see it with new eyes?
