FROM HISTORICAL SANTO DOMINGO TO THE TROPICAL FLORA OF ITS BOTANICAL GARDENS

In a nutshell

Set off and keep your eyes wide open: Santo Domingo won't wait! Start with a trio to shout about: City walls, Fortaleza Ozama and Alcázar de Colón. **Then career along El Malecón, with the sea in the background and the city buzzing around you. **But the real scene-stealer? The largest botanical gardens in the Caribbean: 200 hectares of palm trees, amazing orchids and tropical nature that will leave you breathless (but we'll ignore that). You can also cross it on a trolley train, so you can enjoy the tropical show without getting tired. The last stop: Souvenirs and laughs. Here nature is not just ornamental. It's a show!

But that’s not all: Visit the cigar factory, amid intense aromas and expert hands. End with a tasty lunch in a local restaurant. The city in one breath.

This charming place, embellished by a myriad of stalactites and stalagmites, was already used by the Taino indios during Pre-Colombian times for religious ceremonies.

  • We also seeAlcázar de Colón, a monumental two-storey building commissioned by Christopher Columbus’ son, Diego, between 1510 and 1514 as well as Museo de las Casas Reales and the Panteón Nacional, where the remains of famous people in the history of the Dominican Republic are buried.
