The largest botanical gardens in the Caribbean: 200 hectares of palm trees, amazing orchids and tropical nature that will leave you breathless (but we'll ignore that). You can also cross it on a trolley train, so you can enjoy the tropical show without getting tired. The last stop: Souvenirs and laughs. Here nature is not just ornamental. It's a show!

The programme
  • We leave the port on a coach that immediately takes us to discover the amazing sights of the colonial part of the city such as the city walls, Fortaleza Ozama and Alcázar de Colón*.
  • We then head towards the El Malecón coastal road (nickname of the Avenida George Washington) for a visit to the Botanic Gardens, which cover around 200 hectares and are the largest in the Caribbean. They were created to preserve the rich and varied Dominican flora and offers visitors the opportunity to acquaint themselves with plants. The natural plants found on the island are on display here, with special areas dedicated to palm trees, exotic plants and orchids, of which there are over 300 varieties in the Dominican Republic.
  • We stop by a souvenir shop on our way back to the ship.
  • The visit to the Botanic Gardens lasts one hour and a half and includes a tour of the gardens on a train.

Start with the incredible Cuevas de Los Tres Ojos, natural caves with secrete lagoons and a legendary sulfurous lake (well known by the Indios Taino!). **Then penetrate the heart of the Ciudad Colonial's colonial spirit, firstly established by Colombus, and you can walk through centuries of history: Alcázar de ColónMuseo de las Casas Reales and Panteón Nacional**. But that’s not all: Visit the cigar factory, amid intense aromas and expert hands. End with a tasty lunch in a local restaurant. The city in one breath.

The programme
  • We leave the port by coach and immediately have the chance to admire lovely views of the city starting from the amazing Cuevas de Los Tres Ojos, a series of large natural caves, scattered with freshwater lagoons and a mysterious sulphur lake, which is said to be bottomless, located in the crater of an extinct volcano. This charming place, embellished by a myriad of stalactites and stalagmites, was already used by the Taino indios during Pre-Colombian times for religious ceremonies.
  • We then enjoy a walk in the colonial part of the city, known as Ciudad Colonial, the first still-existing settlement created by Christopher Columbus and other Spanish explorers upon their arrival in the New World and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990. It is home to the most significant constructions built during the colonial period.
  • We also seeAlcázar de Colón, a monumental two-storey building commissioned by Christopher Columbus’ son, Diego, between 1510 and 1514 as well as Museo de las Casas Reales and the Panteón Nacional, where the remains of famous people in the history of the Dominican Republic are buried.
  • Our next stop is the cigar museum and factory to see how Dominican cigars are made and can be bought to take home.
  • On our way back to the port, we will pass by the Presidential palace.

  • We leave the port on a coach that immediately takes us to discover fantastic views of the city with its Columbus Lighthouse, a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus on the 5th centenary of the discovery of America.
  • We have the chance of taking a few pictures and head on foot towards the colonial part of the city, known as Ciudad Colonial, the first still-existing settlement created by Christopher Columbus and other Spanish explorers upon their arrival in the New World and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990. It is home to the most significant constructions built during the colonial period.
  • We also see Alcázar de Colón, a monumental two-storey building commissioned by Christopher Columbus’ son, Diego, between 1510 and 1514 as well as the Museo de las Casas Reales and the cathedral, the first in the New World.
  • We continue along Calle Las Dama, the first road in the colonial area, and enjoy a visit to the Panteón Nacional, where the remains of famous people from the history of the Dominican Republic are buried.
  • At the end of our visit, we have a little free time for some shopping in Calle El Conde.
