CUBE HOUSES AND MARITIME HISTORY: EXPLORING ROTTERDAM

CUBE HOUSES AND MARITIME HISTORY: EXPLORING ROTTERDAM

Discover bold architectural experiments and historic riverside districts during this approximately four-hour excursion around Rotterdam. You¿ll enjoy several scenic drives, a guided walking tour of the Delfshaven district and free time, with highlights including the Markthal of Rotterdam and a photo stop of the quirky Cube Houses.

Excursion details<-strong><-p>

The Netherlands¿ capital, Amsterdam, may get a lot of attention, but the country¿s second-largest city ¿ Rotterdam ¿ is an under-the-radar unmissable treat, as you¿ll discover on this excursion.<-p>

Begin with a sightseeing drive from the port, lasting about one hour, which takes you into the heart of the city. Along the way you¿ll drive down Weena Street and through the Kop van Zuid area, both housing soaring structures and angular buildings that symbolise Rotterdam¿s thirst for modern architecture. The city was heavily damaged by bombs during the Second World War and its centre was rebuilt largely using experimental contemporary architectural design, resulting in a striking cityscape that continues to evolve.<-p>

Other sights you¿ll pass on this part of the tour include the City Hall ¿ one of the few central buildings to escape bomb damage ¿ the 185-metre-tall Euromast (the tallest observation tower in the Netherlands) and the sprawling Groot Handelsgebouw building (dating back to 1953 and another symbol of Rotterdam¿s post-war reconstruction), plus many more. The coach-based itinerary ends with a photo stop of about 15 minutes at the bright yellow ¿cube houses¿, built at seemingly surreal and tilted angles, but which also operate as residencies. You¿ll then have approximately 45 minutes of free time at the Markthal of Rotterdam, which could be used for further sightseeing around the city centre or to venture inside the Market hall and admire the massive ceiling mural, "Horn of Plenty," which showcases vibrant images of fresh produce and seafood, making the market feel like a giant, immersive painting.<-p>

Afterwards, your scenic driving tour continues for around 45 minutes, passing more key city sights before arriving in Delfshaven. This waterfront area also escaped much of the bombing that took place, meaning that its traditional Dutch architecture is still on display. Set off on an approximately 45-minute guided walking tour of Delfshaven and its canals to learn more about the district¿s maritime history and gin-distilling heritage. Following the walking tour, a transfer of about 30 minutes returns to the port, concluding the excursion.<-p>

Important Information:<-strong>The visit of Delfshaven includes walking on some cobblestones. Depending on the traffic in the city on the day of the visit, the itinerary of the sightseeing bus tour may vary, so the places listed in the description may be replaced by other attractions.<-p>

DISCOVER THE CITY OF ROTTERDAM FOR ANNIVERSARY

DISCOVER THE CITY OF ROTTERDAM FOR ANNIVERSARY

Your tour begins as you board your coach and travel past creative and modern architectural sights, including the Weena building, Café Rotterdam, Schouwburgplein and Kop van Zuid. You ll witness Coolsingel, the main street of the central area of Rotterdam on the right bank of the Maas. At the near end of this wide street stands the Town Hall (Stadhuis), built between 1914 and 1920 in Dutch Renaissance style. View the 607-foot tall Euromast tower. The city center also boasts pre-war architecture such as the Van Nelle Factory, one of the most important historic industrial buildings in the Netherlands, and the Huis Sonneveld. The innovative and adventurous period after the war is expressed in such structures as the Groothandelsgebouw, one of the first major buildings built after the bombing of Rotterdam in the Second World War, the Kunsthal, the Luxor Theater and the Erasmus Bridge. After enjoying some free time in the city centre, the itinerary continues with a photo stop at Cube Houses. Next on your itinerary is a brief walking tour of Delfshaven, a borough of Rotterdam on the right bank of river Nieuwe Maas. It was from here that the "Pilgrim Fathers" set out on their epic journey to America in 1620. After this visit, you will make your way back to the ship.

Please note: The visit of Delfshaven includes walking on some cobblestones.<-p>
