• Our Jeep adventure takes us to the Ranu Raraku archaeological site. Researchers consider it the cradle of the moai civilization and, for visitors, it is one of the most exclusive and mysterious sites in the world.
• Upon arrival, we are immediately enchanted by the incredible scenery that opens up before our eyes * an ancient volcanic crater that was once used by the Rapa Nui population to extract and carve the enigmatic monoliths.
• Scattered around the grassy land, there are almost 400 moai statues * their different shapes and positions are perfect to understand the various carving stages. Some are still attached to the rock, others are semi-carved or completed and others are tilted or erected.

• An exclusive experience to enjoy the most remote and mysterious place in the Pacific Ocean * Easter Island. Our adventure start by exploring Orongo, an ancient village where 15 young athletes from the different tribes used to compete in a race to win the title of birdman every year.
• The heroic athletes would set off from the point where the 250 metre high cliff meets the inner wall of the Ranu Kau crater and face the ocean waves to reach the island in the hopes of conquering an egg laid by a “sooty tern”, a rare bird considered sacred, that they would then have to bring back with them to the village.
• We stroll among masonry houses that blend in with the surrounding nature, perched between the blue skies and the cliffs dropping into the ocean. Only silence and the screech of the birds surround us * the only noise is that of our bubbling emotions.
• We then reach one of the most significant sites of the island * Ranu Raraku, the quarry and workshop where the moais where carved.
• Over 390 moais appear before us with a myriad of shapes, sizes and positions * anchored to the rock, laid down, partially buried or fully erected in their majestic dignity. They are a perfect representation of the various phases of the carving process.
• The most exclusive stop in our tour is a luxury lunch which we have the privilege to enjoy while overlooking the ocean, with our eyes gazing towards the horizon * the ideal location for a true VIP lunch. Essential, yet elegant and imposing at the same time.

In the remote Easter Island, we discover some of the places connected to moais, giant rock statues with human traits * from the quarry where the giant monoliths were extracted, to the village famous for the birdman ceremony, down to the majestic Ahu Akivi platform with its seven statues.

• The excursion lasts all day and is the perfect occasion to explore Easter Island.
• Our day is divided into three sections * the Ranu Raraku site, the open-air quarry where moais were extracted and carved, the Ahu Akivi platform with its seven majestic moais. Ahu Tongariki platform, the most majestic of the island with 15 extraordinary moais erected as a sort of invincible army near the ocean. Only one still has the original headdress.
• In Ranu Raraku, we enter the quarry where the tuff blocks used to sculpt the moais, some sort of enormous rock heads, were extracted.
• We walk among hundreds of moais and see the different processing stages * some are still trapped in the rock, others are just outlined, and others are complete.
• The place emanates a mysterious magic and the least we can do is take a photo of this scenery unencumbered by the passing of time.
• We then move on the Ahu Akivi platform, which supports seven marvellous statues facing the ocean. The site is the only one where the moais, which are all identical, are arranged to face the sunset directly during the Spring Equinox and have their back to the sunrise during the Autumn Equinox. An oral legend says that the soul of the king saw Easter Island while floating above the ocean in a dream. When he woke up, the king decided to send some explorers to look for the island. The seven statues represent the seven explorers who, having arrived on the island, look towards the ocean waiting for their king.
• Our excursion ends with the marvellous beach of Anakea, with its white sand and tropical vegetation and where we enjoy a delicious barbecue lunch. If we want, we can take a dip in the cool and sometimes strong ocean waters.

Ancient legends of birdmen, ceremonies that challenge the elements, ancestral stone monoliths erected with astronomic precision - an excursion in the worlds of Orongo and Ahu Akiv.

• We set off to discover Orongo, a small village overlooking the ocean and some charming islets. The partially restored site is located on the side of a cliff dropping into the ocean.
• A ceremonial village only frequented on special occasions, Orongo is populated by masonry houses with a curved roof covered in grass. The small doors enabled warriors to monitor the arrival of enemy tribes.
• Orongo was the hub of an ancient cult followed by the entire island - the birdman cult. The defining ritual was an annual race to obtain the first sooty tern egg. Each local tribe was represented by a young athlete in the competition.
• After climbing down Orongo's cliff, athletes would swim to the islets with the help of a small raft facing the strength of the ocean waves. The athlete who managed to find the egg and take it back intact after tying it to his forehead acquired the honorary title of “birdman”, while the tribe chief acquired the prestige among his tribe and the entire island. The last competitions are said to have occurred between 1866 and 1867.
• Our next stop is the yet to be restored Vinapu platform. It is made up of carefully carved blocks held together without mortar with a technique similar to that used by the Incas. According to archaeologists, this is striking evidence of the connection between the island’s first inhabitants and the populations from South America.
• Various moais, among which an example of female moai, are scattered on the grass.
• Our excursion ends with the Ahu Akivi platform, the only one to support seven magnificent moais facing the ocean. They are all identical and arranged so that they face the sunset directly during the Spring Equinox and have their backs to sunrise during the Autumn Equinox. An astronomic characteristic observed only in this part of the island.
• The site was restored in the 1960s with what are believed to be the original lifting techniques. The architects involved in the restoration calculated that it would take 30 men a year working 8 hours a day to carve a single moai. It would have taken 90 men to transfer the statue from the quarry to the site along a purposely prepared road and it would have taken these 90 men three months to erect a moai.
• Whatever the truth, figures and technique used, all we can do is admire this site in all its beauty and mysterious charm. Its memory will remain forever in hour hearts.

We feel like modern Gullivers in the land of the giants as we walk among the moais, large monolithic statues located in one of the most mysterious and fascinating archaeological sites on the planet.

• A unique opportunity to admire two of the main attractions on the island - the ancient moai complex of Ahu Tahai and Rano Raraku, the crater where the monoliths were extracted to be carved and erected.
• Ahu Taha dates back to the 7th century b.C. and is home to 3 platforms (ahu in the local language) supporting the giant moai statues.
• Ahu Ko Te Riku supports a moai that is over 4.5 metres tall and weighing approximately 20 tons. The Ahu Vai Uri platform supports 5 stones of various shapes and sizes, while Ahu Tahai, the central platform, supports a solitary moai with no hair.
• We then reach Rano Raraku, a unique place steeped in mystery. It is a volcanic crater nicknamed “the nursery”, as the tuff blocks used to carve the moai were extracted from there.
• In such an ancestral natural scenery, which emanates a vibrant emotional intensity, we stroll amazed and incredulous under the static gazes of partially-carved moais that are still prisoners to the stone and others that are buried up to their shoulders or tilted.
• Each statue represents a stage of the long and strenuous process employed to carve the monoliths. We admire the different shapes and sizes, the smallest decorative details and the holes used to lift and move the statues.
• The most striking monoliths are a gigantic 21 metre high moai, the largest, and the squatting moai, which was almost entirely buried when it was discovered.
• There are over 390 statues on the site, scattered in a wild scenery that exalts the magic of their mystery.
• We finally reach the Ahu Togariki platform, the most majestic of the island with 15 extraordinary moais erected as a sort of invincible army near the ocean. Only one still has the original headdress.
• Our excursion does not end before seeing the petroglyphs near the platform, which depict a turtle with a human face, a tuna, a birdman and other symbols part of the rongo-rongo culture.

One of the unresolved mysteries of our planet 4,000 km off the Chilean coast * the great monoliths of Ahu Tahai and Ahu Akivi on Easter Island survive through the centuries emanating a magical yet enigmatic strength.

• Our excursion takes us to discover the island and its monolithic treasures * the moais.
• Short walks will take us to admire the most interesting sights of the island.
• Our fist stop is Ahu Tahai, a site dating back to the 7th century b.C. and restored in 1967-68 by archaeologist William Mulloy, whose ashes rest under a small headstone in the southern part of the complex.
• The site is home to three ahus, i.e. stone platforms, supporting seven enormous monolithic heads called moais. The large solitary moai with no hair is located at the centre of the first platform, the second ahu has a moai with hair and disturbing round eyes, while the third ahu supports 5 moais of various shapes and sizes.
• We then continue towards Ahu Akivi, a large platform that supports seven large moais. It is the only platform facing the sea instead of the centre of the island and, during the equinoxes, the seven statues face the sunset, meaning the site was perhaps of astronomical importance.
• The mystery may never be unveiled but what is certain is that our visit to these archaeological site, a perfect example of incredible human skill already in remote times, will leave an indelible impression in our memories.
