TIMELESS ORTIGIA... WITH A SPECIAL APERITIF
Ortigia is an explosive mix of history, legends and picture-postcard scenery, with theatrical touch of the Baroque. Wander through narrow streets that have witnessed more invasions than the history books recount, discover a cathedral that was once a Greek temple, and listen to tales of unlucky nymphs. All with a tasting at the end - because you can't take in culture on an empty stomach!
Main stops
• Alleyways, Baroque buildings and views to make you fall head over heels
• External visit to the cathedral
• Stop at the legendary Fountain of Arethusa
• Tasting
The programme
Welcome to Ortigia, the island with more layers of history than a good lasagne. We'll start with Syracuse Cathedral, which has been subject to an architectural makeover that lasted for centuries: originally constructed as the Temple of Minerva, today it blends the sacred and the pagan, with its Doric columns still clearly visible.
Then it's straight to the Arethusa Spring, the setting of a great love story (or mythological stalking?), where a nymph transformed herself into a spring of water to escape the advances of a overly insistent admirer. Back then, you couldn't just block unwanted suitors on social media, after all!
The journey then continues through the Baroque splendor of the city: Archimede Square, with its spectacular Fountain of Diana and stately palaces that will make you feel like an explorer from days gone by. Without forgetting Corso Matteotti, the elegant shopping street where you and your wallet can also succumb to the charms of art.
And to top it all off, a tasting awaits in a place brimming with authentic charm, where the past is intertwined with flavor. A taste of Sicily that recalls the sea and citrus fruits, accompanied by a glass of something bubbly. Because every great story deserves a final toast.
