Snorkeling

SNORKELING FACE TO FACE WITH SEA LIONS

In a nutshell

Slip into your wetsuit, mask and snorkel and swim on the surface of the water, face to face with the sea lions of Punta Loma. And we really mean face to face: sometimes, they get so close that you can even count their whiskers! With your snorkeling instructor you'll learn how to get to know and interact with them; your aquatic adventure will be 100% safe and thrilling.

Main stops
  • Snorkeling experience with sea lions

The programme
  • Your first stop is the diving center, where you'll find fins, mask, snorkel and a wetsuit in your size.
  • The adventure begins straight away: on the boat, you'll skirt along sheer cliffs and admire Patagonia's wild views from a unique perspective.
  • At Punta Loma the beach is inhabited by sea lions all year round: on board the boat, you'll have all the time and comfort you need to observe them: on the beach they are on guard and territorial, but in the sea, they are curious and it's easier to get close to them.
  • And now: plunge into the blue of the Argentine Sea with your expert snorkeling guide and the sea lions will get closer and closer, until you find yourself face to face.
  • Do you know why they're called sea lions? Both the males and the females have a thick mane, even though they differ greatly in size. Just think * the males can weigh up to 300 kg!
  • A snack on dry land is just what you need to end on a high note: enjoy it with your companions on this adventure, as you think back to the unique encounters that you've had today.
Good to know
  • We'll provide the fins, mask, and snorkel.
  • Only bring what you need: a swimming costume, a backpack with beach towel, a hat, suncream and bottle of water.
A KAYAK ADVENTURE AMONG THE SEA LIONS
Kayak with Sea Lions

A KAYAK ADVENTURE AMONG THE SEA LIONS

In a nutshell

Climb into your kayak and prepare for adventure: you'll paddle past high cliffs and beaches, just a stone's throw away from sea lions and elephant seals. Then, it's time to take a stroll through the Patagonian steppe in the Valdes nature reserve, to admire the boundless sky and deep blue of the Argentine Sea from the land too. Breathe it in...you're in close contact with nature in its purest form.

Main stops
  • Sightseeing kayak tour along the Puerto Piramides coastline
  • Walk through the Valdes nature reserve
  • Packed lunch

The programme
  • Climb onto the bus and head north, towards the Valdes peninsular: keep your eyes peeled, because you could spot armadillos, albatross and other Patagonian animals from the window.
  • Your destination is Puerto Piramides, the last outpost at the entrance to the vast Valdes nature reserve: 400,000 hectares of wild nature, and a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Here, you'll climb into your kayak and learn how to paddle on the ocean with your expert guide. As you slip over the blue waters, you'll reach Punta Piramides, with its colonies of elephant seals and sea lions, terns and cormorants hunting right next to you.
  • Once you come round the point, you can admire the interesting rock formations, and now you'll know why it's called Punta Piramides. Then, pull up on the beach, discover the fossils and natural caves and glimpse the Argentine Sea from dry land.
  • This is not your only opportunity to stretch your legs though: at Puerto Piramides, you'll leave your kayak behind, and after your lunch break, you'll walk through the reserve's immense Patagonian steppe. Now, your adventure really is complete.
Good to know
  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the route, plus bring a swimming costume and a change of clothes.
  • A packed lunch is included in the experience.
  • The cost is per kayak.

SAILING AMONG THE HISTORY AND CREATURES OF PATAGONIA

In a nutshell

Set sail across the blue waters of Patagonia with a local skipper in search of dolphins, sea lions and shipwrecks visited by cormorants, and discover the stories of the pioneers who arrived from Wales and settled here 150 years ago, as well as the tale of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the two famous outlaws who found refuge here for a while. A succession of unique landscapes, just waiting to be discovered like a true explorer!

Main stops
  • Dinghy tour to spot dolphins, sea lions and birds from the Golfo Nuevo

The programme
  • The boat awaits you just a few steps from the pier: your local skipper will be there already, ready to set sail together on the waters of the Golfo Nuevo.
  • The gulf is home to just two cities * the rest is just wild nature: the seagulls follow the boat, while Manx shearwaters, oystercatchers and South American terns fly over the waves.
  • At Punta Loma, the beach below the plummeting cliff, the colony of sea lions that you now see before you lives here all year round. But with a bit of luck, you might also spot penguins and dolphins playing among the waves.
  • Then it's the turn of Kaiser beach, with dunes that contrast with the blue of the ocean, and Paranà beach, with dozens of cormorants perching on the wreck of the Folias.
  • Your guide will tell you the story of the men and women who first lived on these faraway shores: 19th century pioneers from Wales and two famous outlaws: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, who then disappeared in Bolivia…
  • Among the stories of the past and the nature in front of you, the connection with this little corner of Patagonia is truly perfect.
Good to know
  • Bring a hat, suncream and a bottle of water.
WATCHING DOLPHINS AND SEA LIONS
WATCHING DOLPHINS &

WATCHING DOLPHINS AND SEA LIONS

In a nutshell This tour is dedicated to animal lovers. A boat trip in the Golfo Nuevo, off Puerto Madryn, to watch dolphins and a colony of young sea lions in their natural habitat.

Main stops
  • Boat excursion, Golfo Nuevo
  • Dolphin watching
  • Punta Loma Natural Reserve, sea lion sanctuary

The programme
  • After a short walk from our ship, we board a boat for an excursion out at sea. We ride the waves of Golfo Nuevo, one of the best natural ports in the world. With a maximum depth of 180 metres, this gulf is a breeding ground for southern right whales, that come here year after year to mate. In these waters we can even sight several dolphins that live along the Patagonian coast.
  • The boat tour proceeds towards the Punta Loma natural reserve, that was set up in 1966, about fifteen kilometres from Puerto Madryn. Here we can sight guanay cormorants and South American terns and there is the only permanent colony of south American sea lions, which are, perhaps, the archetypal sea lion. Indeed, males have a very large head with a well-developed mane, making them the most lionesque of the eared seals. Young sea lions that are not yet sexually mature can be sighted along this coast all year round.
Good to know
  • We recommend that you book early because only a limited number of places are available.
  • The narration of this experience will be conducted in either English or Spanish.

IN WILD PATAGONIA, AMONG SEA LIONS AND DINOSAURS

In a nutshell

Climb onto the bus and discover the wild soul of Patagonia: the cliffs of Punta Loma and the beach where sea lions live all year round. Then, meet the giant dinosaurs at the museum in Trelew, which is home to 12 full skeletons. However, there's only one star of the show: it roamed this earth a 150 million years ago and is among the largest dinosaurs in the world! Ready to discover it?

Main stops
  • Punta Loma Reserve: photo stop
  • Trelew Museum of Paleontology: Interior visit

The programme
  • The bus heads south and takes the provincial dirt road leading to Punta Loma, with a view over the cliffs and the only sea lion colony that is inhabited all year round.
  • The males patrol the beach to defend their harem, and the females take care of the young as well as hunting for food: you've got plenty of time and comfort to take enough pictures for a whole photo book.
  • With your camera roll full, get back on the bus and head towards the paleontology museum in Trelew, a small Welsh town in the heart of Patagonia. Here, take a step back in time and discover what it was like when the biggest dinosaurs on earth lived here.
  • In this region, scientists have found many giant dinosaur skeletons, almost all of them intact: the biggest weighed as much as 14 elephants!
  • Discover the world of fossils too, and find out about the nature and diet of these Patagonian dinosaurs: 100 million years ago, where the steppe is today, were huge forests of tall trees. Ask your guide how long the necks of the herbivores that ate them were!
Good to know
  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for the experience.
  • Bring a hat, suncream and a bottle of water.
  • The narration of this experience will be conducted in either English or Spanish.

PUNTA LOMA RESERVE, PATAGONIA RANCHO AND PUERTO MADRYN ECO-CENTRE

In a nutshell

An interesting excursion to admire the extraordinary sea lions of the Punta Loma reserve, with a stop in a typical farm where we can witness sheep shearing as well as a visit to the Puerto Madryn eco-centre. A full immersion into the amazing nature of this unspoilt region.

Main stops
  • Punta Loma reserve, sea lion sanctuary
  • Estancia San Guillermo, sheep shearing, snack
  • Puerto Madryn eco-centre, marine ecosystems

The programme
  • We cross the Puerto Madryn residential area to reach the Punta Loma reserve, which was established in 1966. We can spot guanay cormorants and South American terns and it is also the home to a permanent South American sea lion colony, perhaps the archetypal sea lions in appearance. Males have in fact a very big head with a well-developed mane, making them the most lionesque among eared seals. Young sea lions can be spotted all year round.
  • Our tour continues with Estancia San Guillermo, a typical Patagonian farm that combines sheep farming with rural tourism. We have the chance of learning more about the local flora and fauna and enjoy a demonstration of sheep shearing. Before leaving the farm, we are offered a delicious snack.
  • On our way back to the ship, we visit the Puerto Madryn eco-centre dedicated to the study of marine ecosystems, the first of its kind in Argentina. In the main room, an educational path illustrates the coastal ecosystem of Patagonia. Data, diagrams, drawings and photographs reveal the magnitude of ocean currents and extraordinary variety of algae, explain why whales jump and what is the difference between seals, sea lions and elephant lions. There is also a reproduction of Mel, a killer whale identified in the Valdés Peninsula.
Good to know
  • We recommend that you book early because only a limited number of places are available.
  • Not all the roads are tarmacked and the gravelled paths are uneven and dusty. It is not unusual for dust to get inside the vehicle through the ventilation system.
  • We recommend wearing light clothing, a hat, comfortable walking or hiking shoes and bringing sun cream with you.
  • It is not possible to take photos using the flash in the areas in which the animals live.
  • The narration of this experience will be conducted in either English or Spanish.
PENGUINS OF PUNTA TOMBO
P MADRYN PUNTA TOMBO

PENGUINS OF PUNTA TOMBO

In a nutshell Punta Tombo is the largest Magellan penguin colony in Patagonia. Each spring, over a million and a half of these cute birds come here to mate and wean their pups. This tour offers a unique opportunity to observe them at very close quarters in their natural habitat and concludes with a delicious lunch of local specialities as a fitting celebration of the experience.

Main stops
  • Transfer to Punta Tombo
  • Viewing of penguin colony

The programme
  • We leave Puerto Madryn by coach and cross the Patagonian steppe heading south toward Punta Tombo, about 180 km away. This spot is universally recognised as one of the best vantage points for observing the Magellanic penguins, strongly built animals, 70 cm high and with black plumage on their head and back, and white on the belly, crossed by two black stripes.
  • From September to March this immense colony is home to about a half a million penguins, who come here to nest, mate, incubate their eggs and feed their young. The females arrive a month after the males, around September, and in November the puppies are born. Only one month later they take their first dips in the water.
  • During the visit we have the opportunity to walk among thousands of nests and gape at this fascinating spectacle of nature and at the many sea birds that have chosen to nest here, such as grey gulls, skuas, cormorants and various species of terns and giant petrels.
  • The culmination of this extraordinary experience is a lunch of local specialties, an ideal opportunity to relax and have a drink.
Good to know
  • Space is limited, so be sure to book early.
  • The road is almost completely tarmacked, except for the last section, which is untarmacked and covered with gravel and may be dusty.
  • The narration of this experience will be conducted in either English or Spanish.
  • It is best to wear light clothing and comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, and bring sun cream and a hat.
  • Flash photography is not allowed in the areas where penguins live.
  • This excursion includes a minimum of 5 hours of travelling.
ONE DAY IN VALDES PENINSULA
PENINSULA VALDES WIT

ONE DAY IN VALDES PENINSULA

In a nutshell

A day dedicated to the fauna of this fascinating land. Recharge your camera batteries, because we will see so many colonies of elephant seals, penguins, sea lions and other magnificent animals that we will want to capture each precious second of this excursion. We will crown an extraordinary experience with a delicious lunch.

Main stops
  • Valdes Peninsula, Ameghino Isthmus, visitor centre
  • Caleta Valdés, marine mammals, penguins
  • Puerto Pirámides, sea lion colony

The programme
  • We head north by coach and after 70 kilometres we cross the Ameghino isthmus, a thin long and 35 km wide strip of land, just 7 km wide at its narrowest point.
  • The isthmus is the access point to the Valdés Peninsula, one of the loveliest and least spoilt wildlife reserves in South America, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. Much of the peninsula consists of barren land with a few salt lakes, the largest of which is at an altitude of 40 metres below sea level and was until recently considered the lowest point in Argentina and the entire continent.
  • Our first stop is the visitors centre at the entrance of the reserve, which informs us about the flora, fauna, geography and history of the region.
  • Continuing down the east coast, we head to Caleta Valdés, a protected bay, sheltered from the wind, where elephant seals live for a few months of the year (August to April). In addition to these animals, here we also have the opportunity to admire and photograph llamas, Patagonian marabou, sea lions, killer whales and a colony of Magellanic penguins.
  • The last stop before we return is Puerto Pirámides, the only town in this peninsula on the Nuevo Gulf coast. Here we have an hour free to admire a colony of sea lions.
  • After having feasted our eyes and minds on the great beauty of the peninsula we round off this extraordinary experience with a delicious lunch.
Good to know
  • Space is limited, so be sure to book early.
  • It is best to wear light clothing and comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots.
  • The narration of this experience will be conducted in either English or Spanish.
  • Don't forget a hat and sun cream.
  • As this is a nature reserve, the presence of animals depends on the season and weather conditions.
  • The roads of the peninsula are untarmacked.
  • The excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.
  • Flash photography is not allowed in the areas where the animals live.

CIJELI PUERTO MADRYN: ŠETAJTE, SLUŠAJTE, KUŠAJTE... GRAD ČINI OSTALO - TURA KRSTARENJA SVIJETOM

Ukratko

Glavne postaje
  • Spomenik Velšanki i povijest doseljenika
  • Vidikovac Tehuelche spomenika
  • Velški čaj i tradicionalni kolač u kući Toshke

Program

Ovdje će vam poslužiti velški čaj i domaći kolač, i odmah ćete shvatiti zašto doseljenici nikada nisu otišli.

Glavne postaje
  • Prirodni rezervat Punta Loma, dom morskih lavova

Hodate uz liticu, stižete do vidikovca i... bum. Mužjaci glume ljubomoru, mladunci izvode show, a ženke sve drže pod kontrolom.

VALDÉS PENINSULA, ESTANCIA SAN LORENZO AND PUNTA NORTE RESERVE

In a nutshell

A full day surrounded by nature to admire cute penguins, elephant seals, sea lions as well as the many birds that populate these natural landscapes, among the most fascinating and unspoilt in the world. An unforgettable tour for young and old alike!

Main stops
  • Valdés Peninsula, visitor centre, fauna, flora
  • Estancia San Lorenzo, penguin colony
  • Lunch, Patagonian asado
  • Punta Norte reserve, elephant seals, seal lions

The programme
  • We set off by coach towards the Valdés Peninsula, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in South America. Most of the peninsula is made up by dry land with a few salt-water lakes, the largest of which is located 40 metres below sea level. Up until a few years ago, it was considered the lowest point in Argentina and in the entire continent. Upon entering the reserve, the Visitor centre informs us about the flora, fauna, geography and history of the region.
  • We then continue our excursion at Estancia San Lorenzo, in the north-western side of the peninsula. This farm covers 5,134 hectares along 5,300 metres of coast and is located in a protected area of the Valdés Peninsula. It is home to a colony of 500,000 Magellanic penguins, which we will have the chance to observe up close. The pingüinera trail takes us to a viewpoint 100 metres from the closest point to the sea. Along the way, our guide will provide numerous information on penguins as well as on the many species of sea birds and flora and fauna that can be spotted in this amazing location.
  • A delicious *Patagonian asado, the region's traditional lamb grill, awaits us back at the farm.
  • The last stop on our excursion is the Punta Norte reserve. From the viewpoint, we can see one of the largest colonies of sea lions and elephant seals in the peninsula.

PUNTA TOMBO

PENGUINS AT PUNTA TOMBO (PACKED LUNCH)

In a nutshell

A unique tour exploring Punta Tombo, a small natural paradise which radiates the authentic spirit of Argentinian Patagonia and is where we will find the biggest colony of Magellanic penguins. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see these incredible birds in their natural habitat!

Main stops
  • Punta Tombo: Magellanic penguin viewing
  • Walking around thousands of nests
  • Local fauna: seagulls, skuas, cormorants, terns and petrels

The programme
  • We will leave Puerto Madryn by coach and cross the Patagonian desert as we head south to Punta Tombo, approximately 180 km away. It is universally regarded as one of the best places to see Magellanic penguins: birds that are 70 cm tall with robust bodies, black feathers on their head and back and white on their fronts with two black stripes.
  • From September to March, this huge colony is home to around two million penguins, which come to nest, mate, incubate their eggs and feed their young. The females arrive a month after the males, in around September, and in November the young are born and a month later they will take to the water for the first time.
  • During the visit we will have the opportunity to walk amidst thousands of nests and be left in awe of this incredible spectacle of nature and the marine birds that have chosen this site to nest, such as grey seagulls, skuas, cormorants and various species of terns and enormous petrels.

PENINSULA VALDES
PENINSULA VALDES

PENINSULA VALDES

In a nutshell A day dedicated to observing the fauna of this fascinating strip of land. We recharge the batteries of the camera because we will see so many colonies of elephant seals, penguins, sea lions and other magnificent animals that we will want to immortalize every single second of this excursion.

Main stops
  • Valdes Peninsula, Isthmus Ameghino, visitor center
  • Caleta Valdes, marine mammals, penguins
  • Puerto Pirámides, sea lion colony

The programme We set off by bus heading north. After about seventy kilometers we cross the Isthmus Ameghino, a thin strip of land 35 km long and only 7 km wide at its narrowest point. This is the access point to the Valdes Peninsula, one of the most beautiful and wild fauna reserves in South America, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Much of the peninsula is arid land with a few salt lakes, the largest of which is 40 meters below sea level and was considered until recently the lowest point in Argentina and the entire continent. Our first stop is the Visitor Center at the entrance to the reserve, which informs us about the flora, fauna, geography and history of the region. Continuing along the east coast, we head towards Caleta Valdés, a protected bay, sheltered from the wind, where elephant seals settle during certain months of the year (from August to April). In addition to these animals, here we also have the opportunity to admire and photograph llamas, Patagonian maras, sea lions, killer whales and a colony of Magellanic penguins. The last stop before returning is Puerto Pirámides, the only inhabited center on the peninsula, on the coast of Golfo Nuevo. Here we have an hour to admire a colony of sea lions. Back at the ship, we eat a packed lunch. Good to know
