Day 5 Sightseeing walking tour of the Victoria Falls Transfer from the airport to Victoria Falls* Flight from Victoria Falls to Cape Town and return to ship

The programme

Day 1 – Soweto, the city within the city of Johannesburg You'll arrive in Johannesburg by plane, your jumping off point at the heart what was once know as the “Dark Continent”. A skyline of modern skyscrapers alternating with historical buildings in colonial and Victorian style will greet you. You'll discover the architecture in more detail as you wander through Soweto, the city within a city and symbol of many battles against apartheid: this is where the house-museum of Nelson Mandela can be found * the hero of the fight against racial segregation in South Africa. You'll visit it before heading to your exclusive hotel in the city.

Day 2 – In a luxury safari camp in Botswana Your expedition into Africa continues in Botswana, the land of diamonds. You'll find many precious things here, starting with the Chobe Chilwero, your safari camp in the heart of the wild nature. From your private veranda the views take in the Chobe river and the endless stretch of savanna: did you bring your binoculars? At sunset, you'll leave the comfort of your lodge and go on an adventure of your choice: float down the river on a boat or speed across the Chobe park in a 4x4. Your mission? To find the herd of elephants quietly drinking on the riverbank. After filling your camera with photos and your memory with fond souvenirs, you'll return to your lodge, for a night under the great African sky.

Day 3 * Safari at dawn and sunset A once-in-a-lifetime encounter with Africa's biggest animals calls for patience and dedication: you'll have both in your 4x4 at dawn and dusk, the times of day when the local wildlife is most active! In your free time enjoy all the comforts of the safari camp and recharge your batteries.

Day 4 * River cruise at sunset on the Zambesi river New day, new territory. After breakfast, say goodbye to Botswana and set off for Zimbabwe. You are 4 km from Victoria Falls and, from your exclusive hotel, your gaze stretches out along the Zambezi river. You'll reach it at sunset, to cross it by boat on a cruise that will leave you speechless: while the sun drops behind the trees and the hills, the banks will fill up with elephants, hippos and crocodiles. Before returning to the hotel, immerse yourself in the flavors of the region, with a typical barbecue in a clearing by the river*.

Day 5 – Walk to the Victoria Falls “Mosi-O-Tunya”, "the smoke that thunders”, as the Lozi people refer to the Victoria Falls. You'll find out why on the morning of your last day, as you walk closer to the basalt balcony immersed in mist from which the river plunges 1700 meters into the abyss, with a roar like thunder. It'll keep ringing in your head, even as you take your plane from Victoria to Cape Town, where the ship awaits you.

A skyline of modern skyscrapers alternating with historical buildings in colonial and Victorian style will greet you.* You'll discover the architecture in more detail as you wander through Soweto, the city within a city and symbol of many battles against apartheid: this is where the house-museum of Nelson Mandela can be found - the hero of the fight against racial segregation in South Africa. You'll visit it before heading to your exclusive hotel in the city.

Day 2 – In a luxury safari camp in Botswana* Your expedition into Africa continues in Botswana, the land of diamonds. You'll find many precious things here, starting with the Chobe Chilwero, your safari camp in the heart of the wild nature.* From your private veranda the views take in the Chobe river and the endless stretch of savanna: did you bring your binoculars?* At sunset, you'll leave the comfort of your lodge and go on an adventure of your choice: float down the river on a boat or speed across the Chobe park in a 4x4. Your mission? You'll find out why on the morning of your last day, as you walk closer to the basalt balcony immersed in mist from which the river plunges 1700 meters into the abyss, with a roar like thunder.* It'll keep ringing in your head, even as you take your plane from Victoria to Cape Town, where the ship awaits you.

VALLEY OF 1 000 HILL

VALLEY OF 1 000 HILLS TOUR

In a nutshell

At the Valley of 1000 Hills you can discover modern and olden day African tribal culture in the traditional and spectacular homeland of the Zulu. In this geographically extraordinary part of the world, shaped first by the windings of the great Mgeni River, then by the culture of the Zulu tribes and finally by the arrival of European man, the hills still beat to the Zulu drum. As you journey into the valley you will learn how these tranquil rolling hills belie the blood-soaked drama that unfolded almost two centuries ago when the Zulu King Shaka, known to historians as the 'Black Napoleon', subjugated the tribes which today make up the Kingdom of the Zulu. Your visit to Phezulu gives you the chance to discover at first hand the intricacies, ethnic customs and beliefs of the Zulu peoples. Here Zulu tales and history will be depicted in energetic, costumed song and dance by the renowned Gasa clan, who have been performing unique plays for over 40 years. Dances of courtship and betrothal, of the throwing of the sangoma's (witch doctor) bones, of war and of birth, set to the mesmerizing beat of the Zulu drum, will take you into another world. You will also enter Phezulu's impressive reptile park, where you can learn about the crocodiles and see some of Africa's most renowned snakes that you will remember forever. Then you can sit back and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with some home-made scones and also take some time to browse through a wealth of ethnic home-crafts on sale in the well-stocked curio shop, ranging from pottery, Zulu fabric art, woodcarvings, beadwork and curiosities. You will be taken back to the quayside in Durban via the national highway.

Good to know
  • This tour is not recommended for guests in wheelchairs or those with walking difficulties

HOWICH FALLS & APAMORE CERAMICS
HOWICH FALLS & APAMO

HOWICH FALLS & APAMORE CERAMICS

In a nutshell

Known to the Zulu people as KwaNogqaza " Place of the Tall One " the Howich falls were first seen by European adventurers in the early 19th century, as transport riders and wagon trains pioneered routes inland from the coast.

After lunch you'll enjoy the Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio. The story of Ardmore began in 1985 when Fèe Halsted-Berning lived on the farm Ardmore, in the Champagne Valley under the shadow of the Drakensberg Mountains. Her passion for ceramic art had been honed during her five years at the University of Natal where she studied fine art and then completed a two year advanced diploma in ceramics. Fèe's first student was Bonnie Ntshalintshali, the daughter of a farm employee. Bonnie became known as one of South Africa's leading ceramic artists, while Ardmore's exciting diversity of ceramic art has been endorsed by Christie's, London, as 'modern collectables'. Fèe's merging of western ceramics technology with African art is only part of the story of Ardmore. Fèe has been described as 'a creator of artists'. As she says: "The Zulu people have a wonderful sense of colour and rhythm and a gift for design and balance, all they needed was opportunity'. The flamboyant ceramics have captured the attention of collectors worldwide as a result of the many awards that have been won by the Ardmore artists and particularly as a result of the Christie's exhibition and art auction in London.

Main stops
  • Howick Falls
  • Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio

The programme

You'll set off from the harbour and drive via Pietermaritzburg to Howick, located in the heart of the Natal Midlands, where you'll see the magnificent Howick Falls, a spectacular, approximately 100 metre high display, almost in the centre of the picturesque town itself.

You'll then have lunch in a local restaurant.

After lunch you'll visit the Ardmore Ceramic Art Studio and meet the artists, as you view the process of throwing clay, sculpting, painting and finally firing these unique pieces. The studio now consists of over 50 artists who mostly produce the decorative collectable ranges while a few concentrate on fine art. Since 1988 when Ardmore was hit hard by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Ardmore has pioneered the recognition and treatment of their artists and sculptors. At a time when ARV's were not readily available in South Africa, Ardmore worked tirelessly with experts in the field to educate their staff in AIDS prevention and to provide medication to AIDS sufferers. The Ardmore Excellence fund receives 6% of all sales which is then used to meet medical expenses, counselling, education and training for the employees. Ardmore also believes in making art accessible to children in impoverished communities and holds weekend workshops at local schools every quarter. Budding artists are encouraged to pursue their talents in a fun and uplifting environment. You'll return to your ship in the late afternoon.
