TROGIR AND SPLIT: AN OPEN-AIR DAY IN PURSUIT OF HISTORY
Explore two towns that don't stand on ceremony. You'll reach Trogir via a tiny bridge, and end up in a medieval maze of narrow alleyways, white stone and the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, built with a divine patience: four centuries, no compromises. Then Split will take over: Diocletian's Palace, the Cathedral of St. Domnius and the Temple of Jupiter will take you straight to the times of the Empire, without any nostalgia. End the day with some free time and shopping, because even history needs some fun every so often.
Main stops
- Trogir: walls, Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, bell tower
- Split: Diocletian's Palace, Cathedral of Saint Domnius, Cathedral Treasury, Temple of Jupiter
The programme
- Our excursion begins with a visit to the medieval town of Trogir. Located on an island connected to dry land by a small bridge, it was founded as far back as the 3rd century B.C. by Greek settlers who called it Tragurion or "island of goats". We first head for the walls, extended several times over the centuries, and cross the characteristic little streets lined with stone houses, grand residences, churches and monasteries.
- We then arrive at the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, which took four centuries to build. The main façade, created by local architect Radovan and completed in 1240, is considered to be a true masterpiece of medieval art. The bell tower, built in the 14th century, is 47 metres high and constructed in three different architectural styles.
- Returning to the coach, we head for Split where a guided tour of Diocletian's Palace awaits. The imposing architectural complex situated in the heart of the old town is on the exact site of the palace built in the 4th century by the famous Roman emperor, who withdrew to live there following his abdication. Following the destruction of Solin in the 7th century refugees from the town occupied the fortified palace, thus marking the beginnings of modern-day Split, whose ancient origins date back to the Greek colony of Aspalathos (4th century BC).
- Our visit continues with the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, dedicated to the city's patron saint, on the site of what was once Diocletian's mausoleum. Its interiors still retain much of the original decoration, including an arcade of refined Corinthian columns. In the cathedral we also visit the famous Cathedral Treasury which conserves a magnificent collection of artefacts, paintings and manuscripts and also holds the saint's relics.
- Our last stop is at the Temple of Jupiter, originally situated opposite the cathedral, beyond the Peristyle (the square that also led to the imperial apartments). The temple of Jupiter is the only one of the three temples present in Diocletian's original palace to survive today, although it has been transformed into a baptistery. The temple's façade has been remodelled several times over the many centuries of its existence.
- Dress code that is appropriate for the places of worship to be visited is recommended.
- This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.
- Having completed the guided tour of the centre of Split, guests can return to the ship on foot by the "all aboard" time set in the Ship's Oggi a Bordo.
- In the event of religious celebrations, the visit of the Cathedral will be an external view only.
- On Sunday, during the winter the cathedral remains closed, and internal visits will not be possible, information will be given outside
SALONA & TROGIR: EXPLORING ROMAN RUINS AND THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. LAWRENCE
Discover Salona, where time seems to have stopped with the Romans and the ruins are superb: amphitheaters, spas and a grandeur - all unfiltered. Then it's time to see the other side of the coast and Trogir, the island-town turned into an open-air museum, with its green spaces, white stone houses and towers standing tall. Pay a visit to the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, Cipiko Palace and the Loggia, then slow down. History isn't fast-paced here: instead it's a leisurely stroll.
Main stops
- Solin: Roman ruins, amphitheatre and baths
- Trogir: Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, Town Hall, Cipiko Palace, Public Loggia
The programme
- We visit the ancient city of Solin where, unlike frenetic Split, time appears to have stood still at the time of the Romans who created a settlement here of around 40,000 inhabitants. The extent of the Roman ruins makes Solin an archaeological area of fundamental importance, where ancient amphitheatres and Roman baths have been brought to light.
- From Solin we head for Trogir, a little town located on a small island between the larger island of Ciovo and the mainland. Along with immense green parks, we'll discover the spectacular constructions that make Trogir a veritable open-air museum with houses in bright white stone, monasteries, churches and towers.
- We visit the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence, the perfect example of Croatian sacred architecture that dates back to the 13th century. We then head for the town hall and continue towards the Cipiko Palace and the Public Loggia, renowned for its relief work by Niccolò Fiorentino.
- At the end of our panoramic tour we will return to the ship.
- Dress code that is appropriate for the places of worship to be visited is recommended.
- This excursion is not recommended for guests with mobility problems.
- In the event of religious celebrations, the visit of the Cathedral will be an external view only.
- Slight changes may be made to itineraries and the length of excursions in order to safeguard your health and comply with regulations and the safety protocol.
