CAMEMBERT: FROM THE STABLE TO THE TABLE, A FAMILY STORY

CAMEMBERT: FROM THE STABLE TO THE TABLE, A FAMILY STORY

Set in the beautiful Normandy countryside, this three-and-a-half-hour excursion takes you on a journey through time, tradition, and taste. Starting with a scenic one-hour drive through fields, sheep farms, and apple orchards, you¿ll arrive in the village of Bermonville, home to the Bréant family, who have been making Camembert for generations. The Bréant family¿s story is one of passion and a deep connection to the land. Charles Bréant, once a consultant, left his office job to pursue his dream of running the family farm with his four brothers. Together, they turned the farm into a workshop where fresh milk is transformed into the famous Camembert cheese of Normandy. On arrival at the farm, one of the brothers will welcome you and guide you through the experience. The 90-minute tour begins in a spacious room displaying their products, including cereals, milk, and beef - all produced with sustainable farming practices. You¿ll be given overalls, hats, and shoe protection for hygiene as you enter the farm¿s working areas. The tour continues with a look at the cheese-making process, with your guide explaining each stage in English. Afterward, hop aboard a mini train for a ride around the farm, visiting the stables to meet the cows and the milking area, where you¿ll learn about daily routines. The ride also passes the chicken cop and other farm areas. Finally, you¿ll return to the farm shop for a tasting session of the Bréant family s Camembert, served with fresh bread and local cider. You¿ll have the chance to purchase products to take home, packaged in vacuum-sealed bags. The coach transfer back to the port lasts one hour.

Important information: This excursion is suitable for guests with limited walking ability, though please note that the terrain is natural, muddy in places, and not ideal for wheelchairs. Comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear are recommended, as the farm¿s working environment can be a little messy, adding to its authentic charm. Guests with any type of food intolerance are required to communicate it to the Shore Excursions Office at least two days before the call. Guides available in English only. Participants travelling with infants that do not have their own baby seat, will be asked to sign a waiver prior to having children traveling on the lap.<-p>

GIVERNY AND ROUEN: MONET'S AND JEANNE D'ARC WORLDS

In a nutshell

From Giverny, birthplace of Impressionism and Claude Monet's place of work, to Rouen, the Gothic pearl of Normandy whose name is also connected to the tragic destiny of Joan of Arc: an unmissable tour, filled with intense emotions thanks to its artistic inspirations, bucolic landscapes and French history.

  • Free time for lunch
  • Rouen: the old town and Rouen Cathedral

The programme
  • From Le Havre we will take the motorway towards the pretty little town of Giverny on the banks of the Seine, famous for being home to Claude Monet's house. The great Impressionist painter lived here from 1883 until his death in 1926. • Inside the house we will visit the blue sitting room, the bedroom with the secrétaire, the old study, the yellow dining room with delightful painted wooden furniture and the tiled kitchen. In the various rooms we can admire reproductions of some of Monet's artworks and his collection of Japanese prints (18th and 19th century).
  • We will then move on to the exterior of the house, where together with a guide we visit the picturesque "water gardens" with their weeping willows and the famous Japanese bridge in a riot of wisteria, azaleas and rhododendrons, ending with the famous water lily pond that so inspired the French painter's works.
  • The last stop on our tour is in Rouen, the city where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake. Accompanied by our guide, we will stroll along the narrow streets of the old town with over seven hundred houses, large and small, built in typical style from wood and timber, characteristic examples of medieval architectural techniques.
  • Finally, we visit Rouen Cathedral (13th-16th century), considered to be one of the greatest examples of French Gothic art.

  • Étretat: rocks, cliffs and town centre, medieval church and market square
  • Fécamp: Benedictine palace, distillery and cellars, with tasting session

The programme
  • The first stage of our tour is the small town of Étretat, located by the sea and famous for having inspired the works of two great impressionist painters: Claude Monet and Eugène Isabey. The town has always enjoyed an excellent reputation, thanks in part to its position which today makes Étretat a famous tourist resort.
  • Before exploring the town we will admire the majesty of the high cliffs and the various forms of the rocks on which the waves break: an unforgettable spectacle at any time of year, immortalised in the famous paintings of Monet and Isabey and a source of inspiration for numerous writers, artists and directors.
  • We will then visit the town centre with its elegant wooden houses, medieval church and enchanting market square brought to life by delightful little shops and wooden architecture.
  • Leaving Étretat we travel along the coast towards Fécamp where we visit the 19th century Benedictine palace inspired by Gothic and Renaissance styles. Although it has the appearance of a palace, in reality it is home to a distillery producing the famous Bénédictine liqueur. The building also hosts an original collection from the famous Fécamp abbey: alongside sculptures, monastic charters and books from the monks' library we can see documents and utensils connected to the production of the liqueur.
  • We will then visit the distillery and cellars overflowing with oak barrels, while in a dedicated room an exhibition of the 27 herbs and spices used to distil the Bénédictine liqueur awaits.
  • Our tour will end with a tasting session on site and an opportunity to visit the gift shop.

MONT SAINT-MICHEL

MONT SAINT-MICHEL

In a nutshell

We explore Mont Saint-Michel, a "wonder of the West" and masterpiece of medieval religious architecture, as well as an exceptional vantage point for admiring the spectacle of the tides which have the biggest height difference in the whole of France.

Main stops
  • Mont Saint-Michel
  • Porte de Bavole, Grand Rue and village
  • Walls and Benedictine abbey

The programme
  • On this excursion we spend the whole day at Mont Saint-Michel, a rocky island surrounded by a magnificent bay known as the "wonder of the West" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Visits to the island are spectacular at any time of year thanks to its configuration, the rich history of the abbey and the beauty of its architecture. The little island, with a circumference of around 1 km, reaches a height of 80 metres and is connected to the bay via a paved road built in 1879 which is submerged at high tide. The area is known for its alternating tides, causing changes to the sandbars that surround the mount. Here the movement of the tides is the highest in the whole of France and the difference between high and low tide can be over 12 metres.
  • We will begin our visit at the fortified entrance, the Porte de Bavole built by Gabriel du Puy in 1590, and continue along the Grand Rue, a steep road that comes to life in the summer with souvenir shops and restaurants and crosses the picturesque village towards the abbey, church and cloister.
  • We will also visit the walls along a route that offers enchanting views of the bay and the abbey gardens.
  • We arrive at the Abbey which dates back to the 8th century when the Archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, bishop of Avranches, telling him to build a church on the rock. The bishop founded an oratory on the island, then known as Mont Tombe. In the Carolingian period the oratory was replaced by an abbey and from that time until the 16th century, magnificent Romanesque and Gothic buildings were constructed. The abbey was well fortified and never conquered; having been used as a prison during the French Revolution and the Second Empire, in 1874 it was declared a Historic Monument and opened to the public all year round.
  • Before returning to the port we will have free time to shop for souvenirs (with a wide range of copper, ceramic and porcelain objects to choose from) and local produce (such as butter biscuits and other typical products of Normandy). We can enjoy the atmosphere of this medieval village whose inhabitants carry on the island's traditions, continuing to make products for the delight of visitors and pilgrims coming to this unique site, just as they did over a thousand years ago.
