Embark on a thrilling 4-hour off-road adventure in a specially designed six-seater Argo vehicle, where you ll be treated to stunning scenery and the chance to see seals, penguins, and other marine birds. Argos are eight-wheel amphibious, all-terrain vehicles, capable of navigating steep paths, muddy bogs, and impassable obstacles, taking you to places other vehicles simply cannot reach. Your journey begins with a bus ride from the pier, guided by your English-speaking driver. Travel from Port Chalmers along the picturesque Otago Harbour and Sawyers Bay to Dunedin, where you ll catch a glimpse of the city s highlights. From there, continue to the Otago Peninsula, following the scenic coastline to Taiaroa Head, where your true adventure into nature begins. Taiaroa Head is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including the world s only mainland albatross colony. Historically, this headland was used by the Maori as a defensive retreat, and later fortified by European settlers in the 1880s. Here, you ll board your Argo vehicle for a unique one-hour tour, providing close encounters with the local wildlife, such as New Zealand fur seals on the rocks and sea lions on the sandy shores. OROKONUI ECOSANCTUARY

Experience the sights and sounds of a native New Zealand cloud forest during this captivating, four-hour visit to the Orokonui Ecosanctuary. Leave the pier and enjoy a scenic, approximately 60-minute drive to the Orokonui Ecosanctuary, a flagship biodiversity project for New Zealand s South Island. It offers a unique opportunity to see real New Zealand fauna and flora in a well-protected, but natural space. Multiple species of plants and animals including rare and endangered species are protected by a predator-proof fence surrounding approximately 760 acres (about 307.5 hectares) of Otago s coastal forest. Upon arrival, take a 90-minute guided walking tour and experience the sights and sounds of a native New Zealand cloud forest. Your tour takes you through Orokonui s grassland, regenerating forest, and the start of the ancient forest habitat. This cross-section of habitats is commonly home to a range of endemic fauna, including tuatara, Otago skinks, korimako, tui, and kaka. The birdlife is abundant here, and easy to see and photograph thanks to the birdfeeders located along the paths. Your guide also imparts their knowledge of Orokonui s history and conservation stories and discusses any taoka (treasured) native species you may encounter along the way. Enjoy the stop at the viewing platform for spectacular views amidst a 600-year-old podocarp-broadleaved forest. Following your guided tour, 30 minutes of free time will be yours to explore the Visitor Centre. Board your coach for a short transfer (approximately 15 minutes) to the motorised sightseeing vessel, the MV Monarch. Upon arrival, receive your safety and tour instructions, embark the boat, and begin your scenic, approximately two-hour cruise showcasing amazing local wildlife in its natural habitat. As you pull away from the dock, take in expansive views of picturesque Port Chalmers. Founded in 1844 during the Otago Gold Rush, this bohemian seaside town raised a memorial to commemorate Port Chalmers as the departure point for the Antarctic expeditions of Captain Robert Falcon Scott of 1901 and 1910. Something of an artists colony today, several galleries, a small seafaring museum and a host of charming eateries make this a popular weekend excursion for locals. The first Taiaroa-reared albatross chick flew in 1938, and this now-protected nature reserve is home to an established colony with a population of around 140 birds. Held aloft on slim wings up to 10 feet (about three metres) across, they provide awesome aerial displays, and are just as intriguing to watch as they go about their daily activities of courtship, nest-building, and chick-rearing. Observe blue penguins, New Zealand fur seals, and Hooker s sea lions as they fish for their supper along the rocky ledges. After meeting your English-speaking guide at the pier, begin a 30-minute train ride to Dunedin s most photographed building - the city s Railway Station. Completed in 1906 at a time when Dunedin was the wealthiest city in New Zealand - this Renaissance Revival masterpiece provides a grand start to your Taieri Gorge Railway trip. After taking your reserved seats, you will enjoy a 5-hour round trip train ride through the southern suburbs of Dunedin and across the expansive Taieri plains, you ll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The highlight of the trip is the scenic Taieri Gorge itself. As the train winds its way through the narrow canyon, you ll witness towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush native forests. Be sure to take advantage of the open-air viewing carriage, where you can capture unforgettable photos of the dramatic scenery.
